Summary of the Running by John Yates

Day 1

 

Birds were mostly plentiful and conditions fair-to-good on Tuesday. Sump's Timber Noodle (Hughes), Swank's Blackbeard (Hughes) and Serial Thriller (Gellhaus) finished their hours with clean work on grouse. Houston's Belle (Kolter) and Thornapple Zara finished with clean work on woodcock.

The judges saw or heard 11 grouse and 13 woodcock during the day. Some of the woodcock appeared to be flight birds, and some of them lifted in groups on Courses 5 & 6.

It was mostly cloudy to partly sunny throughout the day, with a couple of brief light showers and temperatures in the mid-30's to mid-40's. Winds were gusty at times, but mostly moderate.

Brace#1 -- Courses 1 & 2 - three grouse were seen - Meredeth Hells Bells (Chaffee) was leased after an incident with a grouse. Sump's Timber Noodle (Hughes) finished with a grouse find.

Brace #2 - Courses 2 & 3 - three grouse and one woodcock were seen - Swank's Blackbeard (Hughes) finished with a find on a grouse and a find on a woodcock. Thunderbird Ginger (Gellhaus) was leashed after an incident with a grouse.

Brace #3 - Courses #5 & 6 - two grouse and 11 woodcock were seen - Houston's Belle (Kolter) finished with three finds on woodcock. Thornapple Zara (Leet) finished the hour with one find on a woodcock, and two backs.

Brace #4 - Courses 7 & 8 - Four grouse were seen - Prairie Sage Rising (Holtan) finished with no birdwork. Serial Thriller (Gellhaus) finished the hour with two finds on grouse.

Brace #5 - Courses 10 & 11 - no birds seen - Grouse Wing Cedar (Gellhaus) was lost off the breakaway, and Smokie Mountain Sally (Hughes) was leashed after two unproductives.

Brace #6 - Courses 12 & 13 - One grouse and one woodcock seen - Modaka's Luther (Butler) had a find on a woodcock, but later was separated from his handler and di not finish. Terhaar's Maximus (Terhaar) did not have a bird and was out of contact as time expired.

Brace #7 - Courses 14 & 15 - no birds were seen - Pecott's Rowdy Rover (Minard) and Roughwoods Zena did not finish.

Day 2
The second day of the Lakestates Championsip was packed with action, with 10 grouse and 17 woodcock observed. Hunter's Benson (Bressler), Emmy's Applejack (Butler), Sweet Hollow Babe (Chaffee), Waymaker's Twister (Tande) and Terhaar's Rocko (Terhaar) finished their braces with clean work on grouse. Five other dogs finished with clean work on woodcock, and others crashed.

Conditions were cool and partly sunny, with temperatures from the mid-30's to mid-40's, light winds and average humidity levels.

The running:

Brace 8 - courses 1 & 2 - Three grouse and one woodcock seen - Centerfold Rose (Holmes) finished with clean work on a woodcock, and Hunter's Benson (Bressler) finished with clean work on grouse and an unproductive.

Brace 9 - courses 3 & 4 - Two grouse and two woodcock seen - Emmy's Apple Jack (Butler) finished with clean work on a grouse, clean work on a woodcock, a divided find on a woodcock after time, and an unproductive. Thornapple Hank (Bressler) finished with a find on a woodcock at 55 1/2, and the other dog established point on the same bird 30 seconds after time was called.

Brace 10 - course 5 & 6 - one grouse and four woodcock seen - Governor Sam Houston (Hughes) was leashed after an incident with a woodcock. Northern Star (Holmes) finished with three finds on woodcock, and a stand where the handler shot but a bird was not seen officially.

Brace 11 - course 7 & 8 - two grouse and one woodcock seen - Sweet Hollow Babe (Chaffee) finished with a find on a grouse and two unproductives. Ruff Hills Repeater (Penn) had a find on a woodcock.

Brace 12 - course 10 & 11 - two grouse and one woodcock seen - Penmark's Blackhawk (Butler) was leashed without bird contact. Springfield Orvis (D'Hulster) finished with a find on a woodcock.

Brace 13 - course 12 & 13 - one grouse and two woodcock seen - Keystone Red Ryder (Ecker) was leashed after an incident with a woodcock. Waymaker's Twister (Tande) finished with a single find on a grouse and a woodcock.

Brace 14 - course 14 & 15 - one grouse and six woodcock seen - Innoway (Hughes) was leashed after an incident with a woodcock. Terhaar's Rocko finished with a find on a grouse and three finds on woodcock.

Day 3

Taz (Ecker) was the only dog to finish on Thursday with clean work on grouse. Long Gone Agnes (Hughes) and Butch Cassidy (Holtan) finished with clean work on woodcock. For the day, 13 grouse and eight woodcock were seen.

Conditions were good for the most part, with cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 30's to mid-40's. There were some short windy periods and brief sprinkles. A steady cold rain began to fall at the end of the running.

Brace #15 - course 1 & 2 - four grouse were seen - Guy Begone was lost from judgment. Taz finished with two clean finds on three grouse and an unproductive.

Brace #16 - Course 3 & 4 - three grouse and one woodcock were seen - Dun Roven Sydney (Butler) had a find on a grouse but did not finish. Nikki's Jesse James (Ecker) had a find on a woodcock and a stop to flush on a grouse, but did not finish.

Brace #17 - Course 5 & 6 - two grouse and six woodcock seen - Centerfold Nell had two finds on woodcock and a back, but did not finish after an incident with a grouse. Long Gone Agnes (Hughes) finished with four finds on woodcock and a back.

Brace #18 - course 7 & 8 - three grouse seen - Berg Brothers' Jack was out of judgment as time expired. Stokeley's Nor'easter (Branham)finished with two unproductives. Neither dog had bird work.

Brace #19 - No birds were seen. Heartwood (Tande) and Long Gone Nixon (Hughes) finished their hour.

Brace #20 - Course 12 & 13 - one grouse seen - Blue Silk (Kolter) did not finish her hour after an incident with a grouse. Highlander's TH (Hughes) finished his hour with no bird work.

Brace #21 - Course 14 & 15 - one woodcock seen - Butch Cassidy (Holtan) finished his hour with one woodcock find. Chip's Torquato (Ecker) was lost from judgment, with no bird work and a back.

Day 4

 

 

The fourth day of the Lakestates championship was packed with action. Twenty grouse and six woodcock were seen. Berg's Head Turner (Holtan), Autumn Fury (Butler), Thunderbird Speck (Gellhaus), Jam-O-Way (Gelhaus) and Modaka's Jazzy Jeff (Butler) finished with clean work on grouse, and Kelly's Rainbow Rooster (Gellhaus) finished with clean work on woodcock.

Skies were crystal clear all day, with a heavy frost in the morning which thawed during the second brace, and temperatures warming to around 50. Winds were light, and humidity levels were fair-to-good.

The running:

Brace #22 - Course 1 & 2 - four grouse seen - Berg's Head Turner (Holton) finished with a find on two grouse. Bloom's Molly (Bressler) was scratched due to a serious tail injury.

Brace #23 - Course 2 & 3 - four grouse seen - Autumn Fury (Butler) finished with work on a grouse, two non-productives and two stands from which he was moved on by handler. Thunbderbird Speck (Gellhaus) finished with a find on three grouse.

Brace #24 - course 5 & 6 - two grouse and four woodcock seen - Fat Man (Minard) had a find on a grouse, a stop to flush on a grouse and a find on a woodcock, before he was leashed after an incident with a woodcock. Kelly's Rainbow Rooster (Gellhaus) finished with two finds on woodcock, and a stop to flush on a woodcock in the air.

Brace 25 - course 7 & 8 - five grouse seen - Elhew Pretty Boy (Stewart) finished with no bird work. Jam-O-Way (Gellhaus) finished with a find on a grouse.

Brace #26 - course 10-11 - no birds seen - Analyze This (Hughes) and Elhew Adam (Stewart) finished without bird work.

Brace #27 - course 12 & 13 - five grouse and two woodcock seen - Kelly's Rainbow Heidi had two finds on woodcock, but was leashed after a second unproductive. Modaka's Jazzy Jeff (Butler) had a grouse find, a stop to flush on three grouse, an unproductive where a grouse later flushed from a tree nearby, and an unproductive. The pointer finished his brace.

Brace #28 - course 14-15 - one grouse seen - Grouse River Stryker (Butler) was picked up early with no bird work. Pennstar (Hughes) had a find on a grouse, an unproductive in an area where woodcock splashings were shown, and was picked up early by his handler.

Day 5

The champion emerged from the last brace of the trial on Friday. In the final two braces, eight grouse and one woodcock were observed.

Weather was cool and clear in the morning, with frost at sunrise and temperatures in the mid-40's at the conclusion of the stake. Temperatures were in the 60's by mid-afternoon, when the puppy stake concluded. The skies were crystal clear.

Brace #29 - course 1 & 2 - one woodcock seen - Blue Warrior (Kolter) finished with no birdwork. Bonfire (Hughes) finished with one find on a woodcock and two unproductives.

Brace #30 - Course 3 & 4 - eight grouse were seen - Can't Go Wrong (Hughes) finished with two finds on seven grouse total, and an unproductive where woodcock chalk was produced. Eaglerock Indigo (Yates) did not finish.
