National Grouse Dog Championship
The National was the precursor to the Pennsylvania Championship. It was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Field Trial Club and was the first organized out and out Grouse dog trial. The first Champion was crowned in 1913 and continued until the Grand National was organized and Pennsylvania Field Trial Club gave up the name so that the name could be used in the formation of the "Grand National Grouse Dog Championship" and the club renamed it's Championship the Pennsylvania Grouse Dog Championship. There were a few years where the title was withheld and some years the weather did not permit the running of the trial, so the following table has some gaps in it where there are no champions named. The frequency of the title being withheld in the early years caused some to protest that the standard was set too high and that only a perfect dog could hope to approach the ideal set forth by the judges. About 1936 the club By-laws were amended to make it that the judges were to to place dogs 1-2-3 and the stake reverted to an Open All-Age stake in the event that the Champion title was withheld, I hope to get the information on the placements in those years to complete the table in the future.
